TheSpoonyCroy - Moderator application

Post by TheSpoonyCroy » 13 Feb 2017, 03:30

Byond ID:TheSpoonyCroy

Colonial Marines Character:Barry Flynn

Age:21

Gender:Male

Timezone:Pacific

On average, how many hours are you available per week to moderate?

Going to say the 15 hours like I said in my last application but probably going to be higher

Do you have any previous experience in being staff (not just SS13)?

Like I previously mentioned in my last app, I was a staff member for a NW reg but I find my prior staff experience here would be a tad more relevant since it was around two month ago (officially resigned on 12/16/2016), hopefully I wasn’t forgotten ;_; but ehh I never did anything notable

Did you play any of the previous Colonial Marine servers?
Nope

What other servers do you play on?

I’ve been expanding my horizons on ss13 trying different code sets so in the past week or two I’ve played on the both Fallout servers, Yog, Alien isolation, and Goon. By play I’ve just tried like 2 or 3 rounds on these servers if that

What are the 3 biggest servers you play on besides CM?
Fallout, Goon, Yog but really don’t play much on them

Have you had an application to Colonial Marines before?

Yes

Are you currently a staff member elsewhere (not just SS13)? If so, where?

Nope

Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on Colonial Marines?

Don't believe so since I was playing yesterday, also unsure if I’ve accumulated any note in my period of being ex-staff

Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on ANY server?

If so, where and When (roughly)?

Don't believe so, since I haven’t been confronted by any admins when I’ve played on them but there is still the possibly even if I think it’s unlikely but still a possibility

Are you familiar with the chat program Slack (its use is required)?

Yes, actually still boots up whenever I restart my computer…

Common Staff Situations:
Write a description of what you would do in each situation (BELOW) the situation. If you start it on the same line, I'll assume you can't follow directions and auto-decline your application.

1. A player is firing his weapon in the briefing area near the start of the round.

I know this is going to look lazy but I really liked how I answered this one in my first application and just wanted to keep it in since I find it would be how I would handle it, of course I might change the wording a tad but it will stay pretty much the same (note: this might happen a lot though this app)

This is an interesting question since this would really depend on the severity of the situation. No matter how severe it was, I would at least pm the accused player to be a tad more careful & I would check his notes for anything similar (and if I notice he is new to the server, I might send in a mentor to watch over him and show him the ropes), if he shot a single player with no malicious intent (this implies I did ask both parties on what occurred and check logs (if available), I would class it as an IC issue since it was clearly an accident and add a note of the event but I will make it clear at least with the investigation it was an accident. If there is malicious intent found well I will see if there is any lead up for proper escalation, if not found, I will give them a warning and possibly a round ban based on severity of the incident and how they respond to the situation.

If the player in question is just on a mass shooting spree with very little said, I would first put him to sleep, then I would pm him to figure out why he did such a thing, and based on what he says could be the difference between a warning with a ban attached to maybe even a perma (if he has any notes related to doing things like this) (which will be place via a 7-day ban on the player at that moment and I would be filing a perma request in the staff section)

2. The Sulaco has a breach to space.

Well since I have been gone seems there is a new mechanic that makes this sort of in the air on how it will be decided and how it will change the dynamic of rule 15 especially due to the vote favoring “its fine just make accessing space equipment easier via availability and accessibility” however with the current rule set, most breaches excluding Sm explosion, pred bombs, and/or Dropship breaches will be fixed due to the issues brought up in that particular thread. Also the final step would be to thank any players who informed me of the breach since its quite easy to miss these kind of things especially if you are playing the game

3. The marines want the nuke codes because they claim they are losing too many marines. There are currently 4 aliens and 20 marines in your /who.

Inform the person who sent this ahelp, this would require a head on the server but even if there was a head on in such circumstances, it is unlikely to be used at all. In my past application I made mention of using a mother report to help “move things along” however from what I hear this power has been stripped away from moderators, so with this in mind, the best thing I could do would be use the sm verb on a marine to help shake things up but this can easily be viewed as me overstepping my jurisdiction on what a moderator should do. The simple answer to get the marines moving would be wait for the automated mother report to kick in.

4. A Sulaco researcher has made several napalm grenades and hands them out to marines. One of the marines throws the grenade into Logistics. There are no admins or other moderators online.

I guess the first step would be me login into this mess and checking unanswered ahelps. After that I would pm all parties involved ie (the marine, researcher, and any workers of logistics to provide context to the situation), check the server logs, check the notes of the marine who threw the nade and determine if there was a valid reason to doing so (and no because the RO didn’t give me attachments is not a valid reason…), if none is found (which is likely) I would issue him a warning and at worst ban to reread the rules (and make sure to note the incident and ban length will mostly be based on intent, severity, and prior relevant recent history). I would PM the researcher to be more careful on who they give their precious grenades to. Again going to state this a lot it seems but depending on the severity of the situation and how it was classed anyone harmed during the incident would likely not be healed since I would label it as an IC incident but if it was classed as mass grief, all affected injured parties would be healed and I would apologize for the inconvenience of this incident to any affected players.

5. A played is starting to talk about the things he did with your mom last night over Ahelp.

I would inform said player that they shouldn’t abuse ahelps and if they continue down this road, they will have their ahelp privileges removed for the round. Also make sure to note this incident…

6. You notice a marine with a name that doesn't fit our naming rules.

Implying that I know the name is 100% a rule break, I would check his notes to be sure he wasn’t called out on it prior, if not, I would pm him and inform him that he is violating our naming rules and he should change his name next round. Make sure to add a note with the unacceptable name included, check who is currently on the server if there are any available admins and if there are, ask an admin kindly to give the said player a random name for the round (if they have the time) and give the player another pm to remind them that the random name will not stick so be sure to change it for next round. If I really want to be on top of this, I would wait until the round ends and the next round is prepping and send them a reminder since people sort of forget these kind of things, and I can’t blame them but chances are if the player isn’t going to remember, I’m not so I’ll try to send reminders when I can but a name change reminder can easily be overshadowed by events from the last round and be forgotten.

Yet, these kind of things are rarely this cut and dry. Marine rule 2, can easily enter grey area territory very quickly with how it is written and how limited some of the staff members and I can be with knowledge about normal names since from what I can remember most staff are either from North America or the UK and this really does limit our scopes of what we would say is a normal name since I doubt any one on staff has a wealth of knowledge on onomastics (the study of names origins/history). Generally, with these kind of cases, a group consensus needs to be made before it can be acted upon and generally one of us will pop something in the rules chat of slack and hopefully one of the higher ups would make a call on it but they are busy people so sometimes we are stuck with this msay consensus as the decision, which leads to the next question since yeah I’ve seen this event occur so many times….

6a. The marine is arguing that: They've used the name for several years, noone has told them to change it before, and that they didn't know it was a rule.

I would like to first off remind them of rule 1, and tell them "please just do it, if you disagree how I ruled this you can post a staff complaint here: http://cm-ss13.com/viewforum.php?f=118", if they continue, I will mute the player since admin pms aren't the place to argue this kind of stuff. This might sound a tad cold but fact is they probably aren't going to persuade me, if anything it just make it worse for them since they might say something that sours their argument (by being a dick, showing ignorance of the rules, etc). I actively encourage people to use staff complaints since fact is no one is perfect and I've been wrong before especially on subjects like this.

7. You see a Sulaco Doctor with an M41A rifle strapped to his back running around the briefing area. There are wounded in medbay, and the other doctor is in surgery.

I would inform the doctor to drop the rifle and remind him of his job and possibly how his compatriots are in need of assistance. If he continues at trying to be a marine, I would jobban him from medical and inform him about staff complaints and where can appeal this ban.

8. You see a Squad Medic performing surgery on the planet. He claims it was because there were no doctors in the FOB.

Check his notes, and act upon those, if there is no prior history, I would pm the player and inform him of the no surgery rule for medics and give him a warning and a note then cut communications there.

9. The round is stagnating. There are 30 marines and 4 aliens. The marines won't leave the Sulaco, and the aliens won't attack. What would you do, to "encourage" the sides to engage each other?

I might have slightly jumped the gun on this question since I sort of answered this in 3 but the best (by that I mean with the tools at the disposal of moderators) would be 2 options, I can give marines who are near xenos on the ground vague hints like “you hear a voice in your head, wait did I just hear rustling to my 3’ o clock” or something along those lines (funny part is, I would do this with how their character is facing so chances are they will screw this up and go the completely opposite way) and my 2nd option would be trying to appeal to the remaining xenos’ sense of common decency and tell them there are -insert number of ghosts- (this being found by the who verb, hopefully mods still have this) waiting to play the game and this is going nowhere, I would tell them I can’t force them to do this but I would remind them to think how they would feel if they were in a similar scenario (being a ghost watching a round go nowhere) and it would be up to the remaining xenos to decide if they want it to end or not. Like said these are the options I can think of with the tools provided however I feel this can easily be seen as walking a very fine line of me overstepping the jurisdiction of a moderator’s duties.

10. The round ends, and a marine starts unloading his weapons on other marines.

3-hour ban with no warning. If there are too many I would delay the restart to scoop up any remaining offenders of this rule break or if missed any I would pm them the next round and ban them for their prior actions and providing an explanation. Depending on their role and how cooperative they are, I would ask them to put their gear back into their appropriate prep room for the replacement for them and head off to cryo but if the player in question isn’t cooperative, I would do the erg ban and take over their body and do what I would have asked them. Also surprising enough, I haven’t seen many players mad at this method (of course very small sample size) and I generally tell them “see you next round ^_^

11. A marine who has recently awoken is using soap to slip other marines.

Depending on the severity of the slipping/griefing-potential of said incident, I would either do 3 things, do nothing and let this be settled IC, provide some minor “divine intervention” and sleep them for less than a second and make an SM about how he is slipped on some soap residue giving him the hint to cool it, or in the gravest of examples I would give him admin pm and personally tell him cool it. I would note the last 2 experiences due to its severity. I do want to say that the last 2 possibilities are very unlikely to occur, just there as a possibility.

12. A marine has killed another marine. When you ask him why, he said it was because the other marine had punched him.

Sounding like a broken record by now but I would check his notes, if there is no prior history, I would inform Player A (the one who improperly shot a fellow marine) of the lethal force rule and inform him on where he went wrong and hopefully he will learn from his mistake but I will add a note to him and SM an MP something like “you hear shots coming -insert cardinal direction here-“ and let this be handled IC however if said player has an excessive (I know completely arbitrary term) amount of relevant recent notes, I would give a ban and base its length on prior history and severity, in most cases a round ban
