On average, how many hours are you available per week to moderate? Almost entirely free during the week. I only work a casual job and it's another year until University starts.

Do you have any previous experience in being staff (not just SS13)? Yes. I was a moderator for a Team Fortress 2 roleplay server for two years. The server is currently dead due to abandonment, but I am still in contact with the previous owner if you need a referee. I am not experienced with SS13's moderating system, but I am aware of systems such as adminsleep, adminghosting, note-taking, etc.

Did you play any of the previous Colonial Marine servers? Nope, this is the only CM server I've ever seen.

What are the 3 biggest servers you play on besides CM? Citadel, Paradise and Yogstation. Paradise and Yog I barely visit, though.

Are you currently a staff member elsewhere (not just SS13)? If so, where? Technically I might still be a moderator on FYRE-G, but considering the site and server are offline, most likely not.

Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on Colonial Marines? No.

Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on ANY server? If so, which server, when, and what for? No.

Are you familiar with the chat program Slack (its use is required)? Unfortunately no, but I can probably figure it out.

Common Staff Situations:
Write a description of what you would do in each of the following situations. Do not write on the same line as the situation - use the space below it or make space as needed. Failure to do this proves your inability to follow instructions and your application will be automatically denied.

1. A player randomly shoots someone at round start and MPs have detained him.
I would check the logs around the time of the shooting, PM the victim and the shooter and ask for their sides of the story (in case it was a case of Improper Escalation), if I am satisfied that the shooting was an accident, I'd let it be sorted ICly, if it was intentionally done as an act of grief or Improper Escalation, I'd give them a warning, note their character, and let it be sorted ICly.

2. The ship has a breach to space and a bunch of players have died or are dying as a result.
I would check if the breach was caused by the Dropship or by an event that leads to breaching. If the breach was caused by these things, I would leave it be. If it was intentionally made by a player, I would PM the player asking why they did it, note their profile, then seal the breach with Outer Hull. Anyone who died from it would be left as is unless it was especially devastating to the round's flow (a Briefing fort getting suffocated, for example).

3. You see a player walking around the ship naked and clearly lost.
I would PM them to ask if they're confused or lost, then do my best without using powers to get them informed and having fun. I'd do this by PMing a mentor who's online about the player and link the player the Quickstart guide for the marine team.

4. A player is being very rude to you in Adminhelps and requesting to speak to an Admin+ staff member.
I would remain calm and politely inform them whether or not an admin/higher staff member is online, warn them about staying polite and calm, then PM said staff member about the player. I would note the player if the behavior was especially toxic, rude, or salty (name calling, slurs, complaining about dying, etc.). I would leave any serious punishment to that staff member unless they are not online. If the player continues to be rude after I inform them that higher staff members are not available, I would check their note history, then apply a heavier ban depending on if there were more instances of toxicity.

5. You notice a player with a name that doesn't fit our naming rules. The player is arguing that: They've used the name for several years, no one has told them to change it before, and that they didn't know it was a rule.
I would apologize for the misunderstanding and inform them that rules on Colonial Marines are subject to change, and what may have been okay previously may no longer be okay. I would let them keep the name for that round if they comply and agree to change it, or I will change it to a random name for them if they refuse and continue arguing. I would note the player if they argue the case for a prolonged time (5+ minutes).

6. You see a Maintenance Tech running around in armor and carrying a rifle. The security level is green with no threat present.
I would let the Military Police deal with it, this is an IC issue. If the player is seemingly metagaming (gathering supplies, setting defences, etc.) I would warn them that metagaming is not permitted and ask them to stop. They would be noted if I believe the metagaming was serious enough to warrant me stepping in.

7. You see a Squad Medic performing surgery on the planet. He claims it was because there were no doctors in the FOB.
I would warn them that performing surgery as a squad medic is not permitted and that they need to request a doctor be sent down. I would note the player for the action and leave it at that. If they had a history of doing this in their notes, I would either jobban or give a short ban depending on the extent of the note history.

8. The round is stagnating. There are 30 marines and 4 aliens. The marines won't leave the ship, and the aliens won't attack. What would you do, to "encourage" the sides to engage each other?
I would whisper to the commander, or acting commander, pretending to be High Command, that "our agents onboard have detected that you have refused to go down despite being so close to victory". I would order that they go down immediately and resume the operation.

9. The round ends, a MARINE starts shooting a hostile IRON BEAR and the IRON BEAR Adminhelps complaining he was killed after the round ended.
I would remind them that EORG stands for End Of Round Griefing, combat logs made between enemy teamd is still perfectly fine, but killing your own team because the round is over is not okay.

10. A marine is running around disarming, punching and stealing gear at round start.
I would sleep them, PM them asking why they're doing this. If I believe that the actions were griefing, I would ban them for 3 hours, note their account, and make sure anyone they seriously injured was ahealed and move on. If they had a history of notes, I'd increase the severity of the ban.

11. A marine has killed another marine. When you ask him why, he said it was because the other marine had punched him.
I would inform them of the rule of improper escalation and tell them that killing a marine for assaulting you is a prime example of that. In most cases I'd like to have them warned, then dealt with ICly, but if their note history seems suspicious or has a history of rule-breaking, I'd do a 3 to 24 hour ban.

12. An issue arises that requires Admin+ abilities.
I would contact any available admins online of the situation, then do my best to make sure the situation doesn't worsen or affect the round significantly.

13. There are minor racist comments going on IC. 9 of the 10 people are laughing and RPing but one player gets offended and Adminhelps about it.
I would apologize for them feeling uncomfortable, but tell them that minor racism (done ICly) is not against the rules. If they continue to feel uncomfortable, I would ask the person doing it in a PM to cut it down a little.

14. A marine opens fire at round start in briefing killing multiple marines and instantly logs off.
I would ban the player for as long as I can, then request a perma-ban. This is a violation of Griefing and ban evasion, which makes it an automatic perma ban.

15. You see a player playing a xeno larva/chestburster run towards the frontlines and die.
I would PM the player and ask why they did that. If they intentionally wanted to hurt the xeno team by doing that, I would jobban them from alien. If they had a history of doing salty moves like this, I would apply a timed ban of varying length.

16. You see a xeno memeing, saying AYYLMAO, REEEEEE etc in hivemind chat.
I would inform them to cut down on the netspeak and memes and give a note to the offending player if it was disruptive. A single 'ayy lmao' I'd let slide but if it continues I would take more permanent action (warning, noting, mute, ban depending on history).

17. A xeno player calls the shuttle a "dropship". A different xeno player complains to you that it's metagaming/failRP to call it a "dropship".
I'd inform them that the hivemind does not see 'words' when they communicate, so descriptive words that a xeno would not know IC (SADAR, dropship, Landing Zone, etc.) are okay to use as they are to just convey information.

18. A Command staff player at briefing near round-start mentions there are aliens on the planet.
I would warn the player that marines do not know about the xenos at roundstart, and that they need to stop. If their note history had recent accounts of this or something similar occuring, I'd take more drastic action such as a jobban or timed ban.

19. A Marine kills another Marine on the EVAC Pod to take the last spot and claims it was RP as he was saving himself.
I'd message another moderator or staff member and ask what they think of the situation, then combine their deduction with my own. If I believe the action was too drastic based on the situation (no xenos/enemies nearby, several empty pods nearby, etc.), I would issue a warning and note their account. If they seemed to have a history of improper escalation, I'd issue a ban.

20. You see a fellow staff member give wrong information in an Adminhelp or incorrectly enforcing a rule.
I would message them and politely tell them they might be mistaken and explain why i think they are wrong. If I believe they might still not be enforcing the rule or dealing with an ahelp correctly, I may ask them to let me handle the situation and later inform my Head Admin.

20a. You see a fellow staff member abusing his powers in-game.
If the abusing is adding to the round (spawning more xenos on the ERT, UPP invasion or zombie infestation), I would just inform the headadmin that this occurred but I believed it added to the experience of the round.
If it was done maliciously I would immediately message the Headadmin or whoever is admin+ and tell them what is happening. I would PM them to stop and kick them if they kept doing it.

21. You see a player talking in OOC chat about what he did with your mom last night.
I would either ignore it, or go along with it for fun. If it comes to the point where its getting extreme, I'd ask them to stop.

My end goal, if I may add it, is that I want to enhance the experience for players on CM. Whether it being helping them with their own scenarios or creating my own, having unique events that people will remember weeks later is something I would love tl be a part of.

I like your application. I like your reasoning to many of the questions, and I'm looking forward to seeing your responses to the questions staff above have posed. A few could use more detail, but overall it looks good.

With that said, I have concerns outside of your application. The issues that would be holding me back from outright approving your application even if you reply with satisfactory answers are that: 1) a little over a month ago you landed a command job ban (which notably was lifted ~1 week after it was placed, which is short for most job bans), and 2) a note for metagaming around the same time.

1) I'd like to know the details of what happened to cause you to land the job ban. I understand life happens and there are reasons to make what happened acceptable - i imagine that's the case here with how quickly the ban was lifted, but I'd just like to be sure.

2) The metagmaing note on the other hand is troubling because you had been around for at least 4 months at the time the note was added. What happened here?

I'd be happy to pm you the notes in question, I just didn't want to post them here for the world to see if they could be easily explained.

Hello Jerkface,

Thank you for your reply! I'll be answering your questions about the ban/meta note here.

1. My XO ban (link: viewtopic.php?f=87&t=14895&p=162693&hil ... ve#p162693) was due to me having to leave very early in the round. We were suddenly in charge of an elder man and his daughter and I believed I didn't have time to log off correctly (turns out I did, but I jumped the gun). I have yet to repeat this without ahelping or cryoing since.

2. The meta note was for me ordering defences to be built in SD when the xenos called the dropship down. At the time I was salty (do not recall why) and had made the assumption the xenos could fly the DS, so I told the MTs and Engineers to set up defences in SD. One of the mods PMed me why I ordered defences so early and I short temperedly told him 'I thought marines could put 2 and 2 together).

And please don't worry about showing my notes, I think people should be allowed to see what mistakes I've made in the past.

So, I do like you, and I do like your answers, but your notes do post a problem with me.

You have a lot of notes in a relatively intermediate dispersal period. You were accruing about two notes every month, and that's a pretty large amount. A lot of them being for meta, memeing, and a bad command history. This is all a lot of stuff we crack down on as staff.

You are a person who is a good player with a poor history who is trying to show improvement, and I respect that, but you're also only showing about one month of improvement right now. You're a person I would have told to wait another month or two without notes before making an application. So right now, I'm gonna have to say -1.

That is a very reasonable outlook, slc. I will admit I never have accrued such a history on any server before and yes, I do hope to rectify it. If you and anyone else thinks I should wait, then I will do so happily.

I'm satisfied with your answers, replies, and your explanation as to the questions I specifically raised. I double checked your note history and while it's a bit lengthy, it's nothing that I would immediately think to write you off for so I'm willing to give you a run as a trial and see how you do.
