Grimcad's Moderator Application.

Byond ID:
Grimcad

Colonial Marines Character:
Kieth Grimes

Age:
34

Gender:
Male

Timezone:
EST (UTC -500)

On average, how many hours are you available per week to moderate?
I have the good fortune of a being able to work from home. It wouldn't be a big problem for me to put in 20+ hours a week.

Do you have any previous experience in being staff (not just SS13)?
Not on SS13 or other games but I have 5 or so years real life middle management experience. And 5 years experience as upper management.

Did you play any of the previous Colonial Marine servers?
I did not.

What are the 3 biggest servers you play on besides CM?
CM is the only SS13 Server I play on.

Provide links to any previous Colonial Marines applications that you've made:
None.

Are you currently a staff member elsewhere (not just SS13)? If so, where?
No.

Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on Colonial Marines?
Yes I have. I received an erroneous Multi-key ban. The link to my appeal and its resolution is below.
viewtopic.php?f=87&t=15509&p=171437#p171437

Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on ANY server? If so, which server, when, and what for?
Other than the above stated, no.

Are you familiar with the chat program Slack (its use is required)?
I am not. But a chat program is a chat program is a chat program.

Common Staff Situations:
Write a description of what you would do in each of the following situations. Do not write on the same line as the situation - use the space below it or make space as needed. Failure to do this proves your inability to follow instructions and your application will be automatically denied.

1. A player randomly shoots someone at round start and MPs have detained him.
If he was detained already I would check the logs to see if the shooting followed proper escalation and was warranted IC. If not I would PM the player asking why he did it and check any notes the player may have. If his reasoning was good (a simple miss-click or something along those lines) or had no notes. I would give them a warning and tell them that that behavior is unacceptable in the future and to be more careful. I'd give him a note saying what he did and let him serve out his IC punishment. If his reasoning was bad ("I don't like player" X, or "just because lol") or had notes showing the same previous behavior I would again tell him that behavior is unacceptable and follow the "banning escalation." 3hr, 24hr, 3 day, 5 day, 7 day, Perma and write any notes accordingly.

2. The ship has a breach to space and a bunch of players have died or are dying as a result.
First priority is fixing the breach in the ship. Second is ahealing those affected. After that is done find out why the breach happened. If the breach was accidental due to the dropship or a warrented pred suicide, no additional actions would be necessary. If the Breach was intentionally player based I would go straight to a 7 day ban and file for a permaban.

3. You see a player walking around the ship naked and clearly lost.
I would PM the player and ask if they were new. If the answer was yes I would link him to the wiki and PM a mentor to go and help show him around.

4. A player is being very rude to you in Adminhelps and requesting to speak to an Admin+ staff member.
I would warn him to calm down. He doesn't get to talk with admin+ just on a whim. I would tell him that while a round is going on, what I say goes, even if it is not the outcome that he would desires. I would then recommend that he visits the forums where he can talk to an admin+ when they are available and if needed, even make a report against me. I would check the players notes. If they have a history of being rude to mods and are continuing to be so after my warning I would apply a ban, following the "escalation scale" I mentioned before.

5. You notice a player with a name that doesn't fit our naming rules. The player is arguing that: They've used the name for several years, no one has told them to change it before, and that they didn't know it was a rule.
Check notes of the player. PM them and ask them to change it for the next round. If its a first time problem, write down that they were asked to change their name. If they are a repeat offender, ban as appropriate. Just because they slipped through the cracks as it were doesn't mean he is allowed to break the rules.

6. You see a Maintenance Tech running around in armor and carrying a rifle. The security level is green with no threat present.
That mostly sounds like an IC issue. I might keep an eye on the player periodically to make sure they are not up to shenanigans however.

7. You see a Squad Medic performing surgery on the planet. He claims it was because there were no doctors in the FOB.
Inform him that he is hacking, because that is no longer possible in the game. But hypothetically if they still could, I would check notes to see if their was a history of the behavior. If not tell them their job is stabilization, not surgery, and to stop now, suture them up and send him up on the dropship. And give them a warning for their behavior and mark their notes. If there was a history, I would jobban.

8. The round is stagnating. There are 30 marines and 4 aliens. The marines won't leave the ship, and the aliens won't attack. What would you do, to "encourage" the sides to engage each other?
I would send messages to both the Aliens and the Marines that the other side was weak and that they must press the attack. Possibly threatening total annihilation if they don't get moving after that.

9. The round ends, a MARINE starts shooting a hostile IRON BEAR and the IRON BEAR Adminhelps complaining he was killed after the round ended.
I would explain to the player that since the two factions are hostile to each other this is perfectly fine.

10. A marine is running around disarming, punching and stealing gear at round start.
Since there is currently a crackdown on round start hooliganism, I would Sleep him. Then check their notes. If none I would tell him that we are cracking down on this sort of behavior and give him a 3 hour ban. Then I would update the notes as appropriate. If there is a history of the behavior I would give them the next appropriate ban and update their notes as such.

11. A marine has killed another marine. When you ask him why, he said it was because the other marine had punched him.
Check their notes. If none I would warn the player about improper escalation and add the incident and warning to his notes. I would then aheal the deceased marine. If there is a history of the behavior I would give them the next appropriate ban and update their notes as such. Then heal the deceased marine.

12. An issue arises that requires Admin+ abilities.
Assuming there are no admin+ in game, I would put a message out on Slack for an Admin+ describing what the situation is.

13. There are minor racist comments going on IC. 9 of the 10 people are laughing and RPing but one player gets offended and Adminhelps about it.
Minor racist comments are allowed on the server. I would advise the offended party to make a player report against the offending parties. I would also monitor the situation to make sure that it does only stay as minor. If it escalates and becomes extreme I would warn the player/s and update their notes. If they continue despite my warning I would apply 3hr bans.

14. A marine opens fire at round start in briefing killing multiple marines and instantly logs off.
That Is a clear case of griefing. I would aheal the wounded. Apply a 7 day ban to the offender. Update their notes concerning the situation and file for a permaban.

15. You see a player playing a xeno larva/chestburster run towards the frontlines and die.
Check the players notes. If its a first time offence. I would PM and warn the player that such behavior is not acceptable. If they have a history of it I would give them a xeno jobban.

16. You see a xeno memeing, saying AYYLMAO, REEEEEE etc in hivemind chat.
Check the notes. On a first time, I would warn the player and tell them that even the xenos are required to be at medium RP levels. Then I would update their notes for the incident. If they are repeat offenders I would ban using the escalation scale.

17. A xeno player calls the shuttle a "dropship". A different xeno player complains to you that it's metagaming/failRP to call it a "dropship".
Inform the player that it is perfectly fine to call it a dropship, that even English is only a loose translation of the Xeno's thoughts. You don't need to know the lingo to play.

18. A Command staff player at briefing near round-start mentions there are aliens on the planet.
OOC announce and remind them that the marines, even command staff, do not know that the aliens exist. Check the players notes for metagaming. PM them and warn them for doing so if they have no notes. And If they do, I would apply the next appropriate ban. If they have metagamed as Command staff before I would also Jobban. Then I would update their notes as needed.

19. A Marine kills another Marine on the EVAC Pod to take the last spot and claims it was RP as he was saving himself.
Check the logs and see if it is true. And if it was really the last spot on the pod. If so then this is one of the few times where it is ok for the marines to kill each other. If not than it is a case of griefing. Check notes and apply warnings or bans as necessary.

20. You see a fellow staff member give wrong information in an Adminhelp or incorrectly enforcing a rule.
I would talk to the staff member and let them know they gave out misinformation or did something wrong. I would also report it to a senior admin.

20a. You see a fellow staff member abusing his powers in-game.
Collect any and data I can on the situation and give it to a senior admin.

21. You see a player talking in OOC chat about what he did with your mom last night.
That's ok. People are jerks and full of salt. If it gets too bad I would mute them in OOC.

Any additional information you'd like to add?
Not really but I'm happy to answer any additional questions.

This is actually very good. There's a few minor issues here and there but those can easily be dealt with in Trial so I'm not going to nitpick here.

+1
I used to play Luke Compton. Now I play Reginald Dempsey.

Hello Grimcad,

I'd suggest against banning people for first time offenses, especially when it comes to recently updated rules (question 10). Some people just don't read the forums/discord and might not know.

I don't remember seeing you in game, but this is a very solid application, +1.

To touch on just a few things:
A. Banning escalation doesn't work as you stated, "3hr, 24hr, 3 day, 5 day, 7 day," it works under 3 hour > 1 day > 3 days and then on rare occasions, you can use 7 days for heavy-handed warnings as well as to place a perma request.
B. On the topic of bans, you should always give a warning if possible. We're not the fun police and your job is just to make sure the player knows what they did wrong. Most of the time, a warning is all that's needed for smaller cases. If they have a warning prior, it's usually worth going up to a 3-hour ban. You also aren't forced to follow the escalation, it's a guideline, not a rule and you'll learn when to use what over time. If you ever wonder what to do, always ask. The staff will always be around to help you and it's always better to get a second opinion over placing a ban too large or too little for an offense.
C. For number 20, you usually don't need to report to your senior (I assume you mean Senior Mod over Senior Admin, as you'd be better off going to them first over me) for someone giving out the wrong information unless you feel it was with ill-intent or a more serious problem. Everyone makes mistakes so if someone is incorrectly enforcing a rule, usually you can just clear it out with them.

Overall, not bad. Few problems but nothing you couldn't learn from just working the job a little. I imagine you'll be fine a mod. Also, did I ever talk to you about something, the name seems familiar.
Ban Appeal Users: If I've lifted your perma ban and you're still unable to log onto the server, send me a forum PM regarding it and I'll work to get it fixed in ~24 hours.

Emerald Blood: CM's mommy and the only head staff who does anything. Even though I hate you all sometimes, I still love you.

Thank you all for the feed back so far.

Just to clarify for Issue B Emeraldblood and Tharinoma. As for my answer to question 10, where I went straight to a 3 hour ban. Under normal circumstances I would have simply given them the warning on the first offence. But once upon a time, during the "Xeno Meme and RP" crackdown of septemberish of last year, I as the queen, mentioned something about bans in hive chat and received a three hour ban with no prior warning. And as such, due to my own experience, I though that during one of these "crackdowns" a more heavy handed response was what staff was looking for.

You handled most of my ban appeal so that could be why my name is familiar? Other than that I've used Grimcad as my screen name since the late 90's so maybe you've seen in on another game some where. I also have a very small youtube channel under that name. Past that, well, who knows?

Here are my responses:
► Show Spoiler
Overall - pretty good app, nothing that cannot be fixed by having a two week trial. Rarely see you in game, because of timezones. Your notes are okay, especially you being in the clear with multikeying.
Also, 37??? really? damn

Oh and +1 from me, I wanted to write some fancy questions from situations that I had on my trial, but I want to have some sleep now

Cheers

As far as the three hour ban went, that was during a time when xenos had very poor rp and where hive mind was basically ooc, so you could consider that a sort of case we're told to handle in such a way for some things. Which is part of why it's important to stay on the slack and forums for announcements, changes in how we handle certain things, and other matters. That was toned down to warnings on the first offense, with disarm spam and general low rp hooliganism being warned and banned now. You have a good application and seem like you understand the rules enough to work out what do to as a mod so I'll give you my +1 for a trial period.

Solid answers in general; those less-then-perfect were not alarming enough for me to doubt about your ability or sensibility.

Approved for trial, expect a mail soon.
