Thesoldier LLJK - Moderator Application

Post by ThesoldierLLJK » 16 Jul 2018, 11:21

Byond ID: ThesoldierLLJK

Colonial Marines Character: Julio 'Ay-Caramba' Borras, Christoph 'Panzer' Hund, Sometimes I play Xeno as well

Age: 34

Gender: Male

Timezone: EST GMT -5:00

On average, how many hours are you available per week to moderate?
  • At least 20, more or less depending on my work schedule and if I'm working my side gig as hospital security which gives me access to play
Do you have any previous experience in being staff (not just SS13)?
  • I was an admin on an Altis Life server for over a year for ArmA 3 called Reborn Roleplay. It was considered a RP server and my job was to moderate in-game, and handle stuff on the forums such as player reports, unban appeals, compensation requests
  • Over 10+ years ago I ran a small private SS13 server using the default game mode, and this was hosted with the Something Awful community.
Did you play any of the previous Colonial Marine servers?
  • No
What are the 3 biggest servers you play on besides CM?
  • Mostly Goonstation, sometimes Aurora, and sometimes WW2/WW13
Provide links to any previous Colonial Marines applications that you've made:
  • I made a private mentor application about a month or two ago that was sent to Jerkface
Are you currently a staff member elsewhere (not just SS13)? If so, where?
  • No
Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on Colonial Marines?
  • No
Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on ANY server? If so, which server, when, and what for?
  • No
Are you familiar with the chat program Slack (its use is required)?
  • Yes my old ArmA 3 community used it before moving to discord
Common Staff Situations:
Write a description of what you would do in each of the following situations. Do not write on the same line as the situation - use the space below it or make space as needed. Failure to do this proves your inability to follow instructions and your application will be automatically denied.

1. A player randomly shoots someone at round start and MPs have detained him.
  • Investigate the situation and send the player a message, find out the reason for the shooting. Check logs, and determine if this was an accident or intentional. If it was an accident, let the MP's handle it with roleplay, and just remind the player how to turn the gun safety on to prevent future accidents.
  • If it was intentional investigate if there was any roleplay behind it, and the reasoning for the shooting. If there was proper roleplay, continue to let the MPs handle it as a violation of marine law. If there was no or improper roleplay then I would determine a punishment for breaking Rule 16 regarding lethal force. Check notes and issue a warning or a ban following staff procedures depending on note history

2. The ship has a breach to space and a bunch of players have died or are dying as a result.
  • Seeing as this is not supposed to happen now from past research, repair the hull breech first and foremost. Not sure if moderators have the ability to do so, but attempt the heal the players who have died/dying or request an admin if they're in game to do it. Investigate and determine how the breech happened. If it was intentional by a player, I would check notes and apply an appropriate punishment for violating Rule 2 regarding not to be a dick. If it was an accident and this happened because of a bug or glitch, I would take the extra step further to talk to the player and find out what he/she did so the details can be made into a bug report for the development team.
3. You see a player walking around the ship naked and clearly lost.
  • Send them a friendly message asking if they new and need help. If so, contact a mentor online to assist them. If no mentors are online, I will assist them the best I can by linking them the wiki, forums, rules, etc... and answering any questions they may have.
4. A player is being very rude to you in Adminhelps and requesting to speak to an Admin+ staff member.
  • Verbal Judo, depending on the situation I will explain to the person I'm trying to help or investigate a situation and get their side. I will explain that I am the one assisting them or speaking to them while not being a jerk about it. Explain to the player that although they may be angry about the situation, if they feel I'm doing anything wrong they can contact a higher up after the situation is over or file a report on the forums. If they're being a real jerk and start cursing at me and telling me to "fuck off" I would issue a 3 hour ban as a cooling off period, and make a note about it and why i did it.
5. You notice a player with a name that doesn't fit our naming rules. The player is arguing that: They've used the name for several years, no one has told them to change it before, and that they didn't know it was a rule.
  • Explain to the player although they may have been using it, that it's a violation of the rules. I would send that player a link to the rules, and give a quick explanation about how intellectual property works if they're using a character name from the Lore (EX: Ellen Ripley). Check the players note history, and see if they have been warned before. If not, make a note that I requested they change the name.
6. You see a Maintenance Tech running around in armor and carrying a rifle. The security level is green with no threat present.
  • In-character issue as it's a violation of Marine Law. If I encounter the player while playing normally, I would keep things in character and say "Hey dude, what's with the guns, we're at code green. Is there a hostile on board or something?" "You better be careful of the MP's guy, they will arrest you for violating marine law with guns at code green."
7. You see a Squad Medic performing surgery on the planet. He claims it was because there were no doctors in the FOB.
  • Inform the player this is a violation of Rule 4 and Rule 19 for power gaming/acting like your role. Remind them that the combat medics job is to stabilize the causality for transport to the medbay on the ship for further diagnosis/surgery/treatment. Check notes and if the player has no history, issue them a warning and note it. If there is a extensive history of not acting the role, I would issue an appropriate punishment following standard escalation procedures or a job ban from combat medic.
8. The round is stagnating. There are 30 marines and 4 aliens. The marines won't leave the ship, and the aliens won't attack. What would you do, to "encourage" the sides to engage each other?
  • I would send a message to the queen and explain to her that now is the time to avenge her fallen daughters, and use her song to get the bird to fly down. I would encourage her to invade the hosts hive and rebuild her family.
  • I would send a high command fax or use the ability to tell the commander in their head "Now is the time to regroup and attack them. High Command and The Company will not tolerate failure or cowardice."

9. The round ends, a MARINE starts shooting a hostile CLF member and the CLF member Adminhelps complaining he was killed after the round ended.
  • Politely tell the CLF that it is not against the rules as they are both hostile factions, and EORG does not apply in this situation.
10. A marine is running around disarming, punching and stealing gear at round start.
  • Investigate the situation and determine if there is any roleplay behind it. If there is no roleplay than explain to the player what they're doing is a violation of Rule 3 and they are griefing. Check notes and determine an appropriate punishment following escalation policies. If the note history is clear, issue a warning, if there are previous violations, issue a ban following banning policies.
11. A marine has killed another marine. When you ask him why, he said it was because the other marine had punched him.
  • After investigating the situation explain to the player what they did was a violation of rule 16 for lethal force. Explain how escalation works, and that a fist fight does not mean they can shoot someone. Ask an admin to heal the player who was the victim if possible. Check notes and determine an appropriate punishment following escalation policies. If the note history is clear, issue a warning, if there are previous violations, issue a ban following banning policies.
12. An issue arises that requires Admin+ abilities.
  • Check if an admin is in game and ask for their assistance on msay. If no admins are in game, contact one on Slack and explain the situation to them.
13. There are minor racist comments going on IC. 9 of the 10 people are laughing and RPing but one player gets offended and Adminhelps about it.
  • Explain to the player that sometimes minor offensive stuff can happen in-character and that the player can say something back in-character such as "Hey guys to far, knock off that crap!" Monitor what's being said and only step in if something crosses the line.
14. A marine opens fire at round start in briefing killing multiple marines and instantly logs off.
  • Investigate and request assistance with healing killed players in msay. Check the players notes and issue a 7 day ban, if there is a previous note for similar behavior, apply for a permanent ban on the forums
15. You see a player playing a xeno larva/chestburster run towards the frontlines and die.
  • Investigate and speak with the xeno player. Explain to the player that xenos are a medium RP role, and that a larva should not be doing something silly such as charging a frontline and dying as they are valuable to the hive and cannot attack. Check note history and issue a warning if there are no previous notes. If there is a history of bad behavior as a xeno player, I would go with a job ban

16. You see a xeno memeing, saying AYYLMAO, REEEEEE etc in hivemind chat.
  • Investigate and explain to the player that xenos are a medium RP role, and that they need to act like the role. Explain xeno chat should be kept in character, and to refrain from that chat in the future and issue a warning.
17. A xeno player calls the shuttle a "dropship". A different xeno player complains to you that it's metagaming/failRP to call it a "dropship".
  • Explain to the complainant that xeno chat is supposed to be considered a translation of the xeno language, and that using the term "dropship" is considered within roleplay guidelines and standards.
18. A Command staff player at briefing near round-start mentions there are aliens on the planet.
  • Investigate and ask the player how they came by this information. If it was determined that this was information they should not have, explain to the player that they are violating rule 5 by metagaming as unless an admin says so all they know is what the planet is down below, and that they are responding to a unknown distress signal. Check notes and pick an appropriate punishment based on note history and escalation policies.
19. A Marine kills another Marine on the EVAC Pod to take the last spot and claims it was RP as he was saving himself.
  • Investigate the situation and determine if there was proper roleplay and escalation behind the killing. Did the player straight up execute the other marine, or did he beat the marine to death in order to save himself the last spot on the evac pods. If there was proper roleplay behind it, explain to the dead player that unfortunately due to the chaos he was killed legitimately. If the roleplay was not proper and lethal force was used with improper escalation, I would check notes and pick an appropriate punishment based on note history and escalation policies.
20. You see a fellow staff member give wrong information in an Adminhelp or incorrectly enforcing a rule.
  • Send the fellow staff member a friendly private message letting them know about it. We're human, we make mistakes, and it's in the end everyones goal should be to help each other as a staff team.
20a. You see a fellow staff member abusing his powers in-game.
  • Send a PM asking for clarification, maybe an admin told them to do something that I'm not aware of. Otherwise if the staff is abusing their powers collect the evidence and forward it up to a higher member of staff with a report
21. You see a player talking in OOC chat about what he did with your mom last night.
  • Banter is banter, and it's OOC shitposting anyway, who cares. I'm pretty thick skinned
Any additional information you'd like to add?
Just for clarification, I recently was able to recover my CKEY: ThesoldierLLJK which was created in '06 and got my CO whitelist switched to that with help from the staff. I was playing normally on my CKEY of Thesoldier702 if you wish to check for notes/activity, but I will not be using that CKEY anymore, and will be using ThesoldierLLJK. My job allows me lots of downtime or when I work my security side gig, so I do sometimes like to just observe rounds if I can't play to make the shift go by quicker. I say average of 20 hours is what avaliable, but it could be more or less depending on whats going on at work/the hospital.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Hi. I know you're fairly active in-game - I've seen you playing a lot of XO, and now CO as well. The impression I have from you there is good, and your note history is pristine, so let's just go straight to the application:
► Show Spoiler
I think you'd do well. I guess this means you're intent on jumping straight past mentor and coming right up to trial moderator? You might want to clear that up with Jerkface directly so there's no confusion. All in all, though, you have my +1.

I feel that the community is asking for people who are fair, impartial, and can make sound judgments. As I do it for a living, I feel like those abilities would be more useful in the moderator role over the mentor role as much as I enjoy helping people. Being a cop I've learn pretty much the best policy is treat people like human begins, and it works in both the real and cyber world. So after my time in this community the people are asking for this, and I think I have the skills to help the staff team provide it.

Thank you for the +1, but I will still answer your concerns/questions as you posted.

1. As far as roleplay in that situation, the only thing I would vaguely consider is if it was a HvH extended round setup by admins and the player was chosen to be a sleeper antagonist and decides to do some radical CLF/UPP attack to cause chaos/confusion

6. I do like to keep things In-character and not break character unless needed, if the player running around in green alert is obviously new, I would notify a mentor or give them some LOOC/OOC information such as the website/wiki

11. It really depends on the totality of the circumstances behind the killing, attitude and note history of the offender when I speak with them in my honest opinion. Also the method on how this marine died as well. Did the marine go overboard and during the fist fight and punch them to the point of pain crit where the other player died because they ghosted. Was there weapons/shooting/etc... involved. Do they admit they're wrong in that case of murder/manslaughter, what their reasoning is. If someone has a clean history and the other player can be healed, and they admit what they've done is wrong and apologize, I think a warning with a note would be ok. If they're a dick about it, or have a poor history I would issue a ban.

18. And yes I do mean by saying Xenomorphs/Lizard/Big Black Cucarachas and not referring to local wildlife such as yirens, dogs, monkeys, farwas, "furry hosts" xenos call them.

Just a few questions of my own to add to the application since omicega already went over it in detail.

1. You notice a standard marine running around with the B18 helmet and gloves and the M5 RPG. Both of these respective specialists are long since dead. How do you proceed?

2. An ahelp comes in regarding a predator being dishonourable, what do you do?

3. A marine shoots another marine repeatedly for stealing his weapon. When you dive into the situation, you find the offender to be a mentor. How do you proceed?

1. This is a IC issue and the player might face some trouble from the MPs if someone rats him out. Im not sure if a marine can physically fire the RPG, but it’s not considered a restricted weapon. If the player is dead and he has looted the player in order to increase his survivability I don’t see an issue with it. As long as he didn’t break any rules to get said equipment.

2. Investigate and find out from the player of what the predator is doing to be dishonorable. Message the predator and explain that I’m investigating an Ahelp and get their side of the story. If I determine it to be a violation of the honor code I will inform the predator that they are required by the rules to follow the code of honor. I will also remind the predator that they are playing a whitelisted role and if there are repeated violations of the honor code they may lose the privledge to play predator. Check notes and determine a punishment from warning to ban following standard escalation ban policies.

3. Investigate and treat the offender like any other player. Get everyone’s side and make a determination, and then if a violation has occurred check the note history on the offender/mentor. Determine a punishment from note history from warning to ban following standard escalation ban policies. If what the mentor did was very bad I may send them a private PM and have a little heart to heart chat and find out what their thought process is. If the mentor abused any of their abilities to break this rule and I have evidence, I would report it to the mentor manager.

1. Perfect answer.

2. You're not allowed to deal with whitelisted roles unless it's blatant grief, predators moreso than others. Gonna have to refer the affected to the forums for a player report.

3. Good answer however, you're also not allowed to deal with other members of staff AT ALL. Gotta compile a report and send it to the respective manager. You're not allowed to note/warn them and etc.

+1, I'm still quite content with the given answers.

1. Nice, good answer. There really aren't many situations where it'd be acceptable.

6. Yep, just have to distinguish between those who know better and those who don't.

11. Interesting. I like that you're confident backing up what some people might call a lenient response. I thought I might throw you off, but you stick to your guns and sometimes all that's needed with some people is a calm but stern poke in the right direction.

18. Good good.

All that only reaffirms my +1. Best of luck!

Thank you, I wasn't sure as these procedures weren't on the staff protocols, so I figured the best thing to do was/is remain impartial and do your job. Obviously now what you said in regards to the predator and mentor issue, take it to reports/let managers decide, and just present the facts the best I can.

Good player, active ingame, active on the forums, good application, right mindset for moderator. The only problem was a few of your answers but if we were to deny you over them that'd just be stupid.
