Slywater - Moderator Application

Post by Slywater » 30 Aug 2018, 08:36

Byond ID: Slywater

Colonial Marines Character: Robert MacMillan

Age: 16

Gender: Male

Timezone: GMT/BST

On average, how many hours are you available per week to moderate?
7-10

Do you have any previous experience in being staff (not just SS13)?
I've been a mentor since 02/16/18.

Did you play any of the previous Colonial Marine servers?
'Fraid not.

What are the 3 biggest servers you play on besides CM?
I have only played on CM.

Provide links to any previous Colonial Marines applications that you've made:
viewtopic.php?f=68&t=15840

Are you currently a staff member elsewhere (not just SS13)? If so, where?
No.

Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on Colonial Marines?
No.

Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on ANY server? If so, which server, when, and what for?
No.

Are you familiar with the chat program Slack (its use is required)?
Yes, I'm using it already.

Common Staff Situations:
Write a description of what you would do in each of the following situations. Do not write on the same line as the situation - use the space below it or make space as needed. Failure to do this proves your inability to follow instructions and your application will be automatically denied.

1. A player randomly shoots someone at round start and MPs have detained him.

If the player has shot "randomly", then either they have shot by mistake, or they have intent for grief (it could also be poor escalation, although unlikely). First I would check the player's notes, and if said player has a history of grief, then I would ban (duration depending on frequency previous offences). However, if it turns out the shots were accidental, then I would let it play out IC (everybody misclicks from time to time). If I was unsure in either scenario, I would PM the player (and maybe check logs) to find out if it was poor escalation, in which case I would explain the procedure and drop a warning note.

2. The ship has a breach to space and a bunch of players have died or are dying as a result.

First, I would seal off the breach. As I have seen this happen before with the Alamo crashing and causing a breach, there may or may not be somebody responsible for the breach. Either way, I would Aheal all effected players. If the breach was not caused by the dropship, I would check the logs to determine if it was caused by a player. If so, I would check the player's notes and find their intent. If they were banned previously for a similar offence, I would ban for a week and write a perma request. However, if they had caused the breach unintentionally, I would inform them of the significance of their actions, and would give a warning at the very least.

3. You see a player walking around the ship naked and clearly lost.

I would call over a mentor in MSay, and leave it to them as long as said player is doing nothing other than wandering around. If they look like they may be in danger of breaking any rules, I may sleep them to get their attention, and let the mentor sort them out.

4. A player is being very rude to you in Adminhelps and requesting to speak to an Admin+ staff member.

In most cases, I would ignore the request and do my best to sort out the problem as is. However, in special cases, I would ask an admin to help out if it's an issue that requires admin+ permissions. Still, I may warn the player in question if they are blatantly crossing the line (violating rule 2), or extend their ban if they are the subject of the issue.

5. You notice a player with a name that doesn't fit our naming rules. The player is arguing that: They've used the name for several years, no one has told them to change it before, and that they didn't know it was a rule.

I would inform the player that their name is not acceptable, even if it had gone unnoticed until now. If the round had just started, I would call for an admin to get it changed, but if the round had nearly finished or no admins were online, I would simply tell them to change their name at the next chance they had. I would then send them a link to the rules and add a note.

6. You see a Maintenance Tech running around in armor and carrying a rifle. The security level is green with no threat present.

I would leave it IC at first as the MT is still subject to marine law. However, I would keep an eye on the player and intervene if it became a problem or if there were no MPs. I would PM the player to find out their intention, and if they had a history of powergaming/metagaming notes, then I would consider a jobban. On the other hand, if they were new, I would explain that weapon restrictions are tied to the threat level, warn them, and leave it at that.

7. You see a Squad Medic performing surgery on the planet. He claims it was because there were no doctors in the FOB.

I would first explain that it is not necessary for a doctor to be at the FOB, therefore he should not be 'covering' for a doctor. I would then check his notes, and warn him if this is his first occurrence of powergaming. Otherwise I'd jobban if he's a frequent offender.

8. The round is stagnating. There are 30 marines and 4 aliens. The marines won't leave the ship, and the aliens won't attack. What would you do, to "encourage" the sides to engage each other?

Usually I would PM the CO and describe the situation OOC, so they can realize that the round is stagnating and act accordingly. An alternative could be to send a fake Bioscan/Queen message with altered numbers to make the battle odds seem more hopeful. Both would not require direct interference with the round.

9. The round ends, a MARINE starts shooting a hostile CLF member and the CLF member Adminhelps complaining he was killed after the round ended.

I would let the CLF member know that EORG only applies to friendlies that are attacked without a valid RP reason. In this case, he was both a hostile, and his attacker had a valid reason to engage. I would also add that there isn't much point of getting salty as the round has ended.

10. A marine is running around disarming, punching and stealing gear at round start.

Again, I would leave this IC at first, as shenanigans are no rarity in req and briefing. However, if the marine crosses the line, I would PM the marine to explain his actions, and check his notes while he responds. If he does not respond after a respectable time, I would sleep him if he's continuing to disrupt the start of the round. If the player is new, and does not understand how you acquire gear, then I would send a link to the marine quickstart page, send a mentor to look after him. However, this seems unlikely as he knows how to disarm and understands the value of certain items, so if he had griefing history I would give a 3 hour ban.

11. A marine has killed another marine. When you ask him why, he said it was because the other marine had punched him.

Getting information from both parties about the escalation would be my first move. If it turns out that a reasonable amount of antagonization took place on both sides, then I would let it slip. If this is not the case, I would warn the living marine and tell him to review the rules of escalation (unless he was a repeat offender, in which case a ban would be given).

12. An issue arises that requires Admin+ abilities.

I would explain the situation to an available admin (via MSay) and let them take it from there. If there are no admins online, I would send a request in staff-alerts on Slack.

13. There are minor racist comments going on IC. 9 of the 10 people are laughing and RPing but one player gets offended and Adminhelps about it.

I'd tell the offended player that it is not against the rules to make racey comments as long as it is infrequent and does not violate rule 2. Still, I would monitor the source of the comments to make sure that this is the case. If the player's comments become an issue, I would PM them and tell them that their jokes are going a tad too far and ask them to hold back.

14. A marine opens fire at round start in briefing killing multiple marines and instantly logs off.

A very obvious grief would receive a day ban from me (extending to a week depending on the severity). I would file a perma request if this player is a known griefer. I would then team up with any available mods to get the victims Ahealed and the situation restored.

15. You see a player playing a xeno larva/chestburster run towards the frontlines and die.

This could be a mistake or an unlucky situation. I would PM the player to confirm this. If the player has rage-quit, I would not add notes as it would be unjust to assume that this larva was intentionally trying to die. However, if the player responds with "I had to go" or something of the sort, I would state the log-off procedure, let them know the importance of larvae to xenos, and warn them. If they did not realize the enemy's position and just got killed, then I'd let it slip.

16. You see a xeno memeing, saying AYYLMAO, REEEEEE etc in hivemind chat.

Everybody memes occasionally, and netspeak cannot always be prevented IC. I'll leave them be as long as it doesn't become low RP, but if it becomes excessive I will PM them to tone it down.

17. A xeno player calls the shuttle a "dropship". A different xeno player complains to you that it's metagaming/failRP to call it a "dropship".

I would explain to the complaining player that what they see in chat is an English translation of the alien hivemind, so using human terminology isn't a no-no, although using alternatives such as "bird" is still preferred.

18. A Command staff player at briefing near round-start mentions there are aliens on the planet.

I would send a PM to the mentioned player informing them that isn't known information, so they are metagaming. I would leave a note for metagaming, but would consider a job-ban if they had previous notes of metagaming. If they were the CO and were known for metagaming, then I would review their whitelist position.

19. A Marine kills another Marine on the EVAC Pod to take the last spot and claims it was RP as he was saving himself.

I would PM both players and check the logs to determine whether a proper escalation occurred. If so, I would leave it IC. Even if there was no escalation, it may still be argued that it is valid RP, so I would give a warning at most.

20. You see a fellow staff member give wrong information in an Adminhelp or incorrectly enforcing a rule.

I would send any corrections in MSay to make sure the information is corrected before any action is taken.

20a. You see a fellow staff member abusing his powers in-game.

I would tell the staff member that he's violating admin protocol. If he doesn't stop or abuses his powers frequently, I would PM his relevant head on Slack about the incident.

21. You see a player talking in OOC chat about what he did with your mom last night.

Nothing. It isn't a crime to be salty, unless rule 2 if violated of course.

Any additional information you'd like to add?

Hopefully a step up from mentor will be a good move for me. If all's well, I should be able to see you in-game more. Thanks for your comments.

Seeing as you’re already a mentor I think I can skip asking you a bunch of what if’s. Your answers are fine and plus by you switching to moderator it would open up a spot for someone new to join the mentor team

Your responses are quite alright. Nothing seems too bad out of all of them and we don’t have to worry about #2 anymore since we have basically made it impossible to breach the ship now. As Ex-Staff here every thing looks good. Also apart with the medic doing surgery, I’m pretty sure they can’t do it anymore due to the skills implementation.
+1 from me, hope to see you up in that list when I play. Cals out.

Ill shoot in some questions that are not mentioned in the topic.

1. What needs to happen before the cmp can arrest the CO?
2. How do you know if something is improper escalation or proper escalation?
3. The delta squad leader is refusing to deploy because he did not get an hpr and the RO now choose to not give him any attachments at all. What would you tell him? And what would his options be?

Ah, Question time!

1. In order for the CO to be arrested, either a mutiny must take place first or a fax must be sent to high command requesting his arrest (as stated in rule 13).
2. Proper escalation requires a valid, believable RP reason. Players involved should be able to provide motives and reasons for the escalation. An example of improper escalation would be a marine lighting up another marine because they said something nasty about their mother.
3. I would tell him that his self-entitlement and unga-instincts have held up deployment and by extension, the round (guilt-trip). I would then explain that the RO is not obliged to give attachments, and that his manner and saltiness has caused the RO to refuse attachments. The SL could whine, in which case I would give a job-ban, he could deploy with no attachments, or (to save his skin) he could apologize to his squad for the hold-up, resolve the problem IC, and sort something out with the RO (I would suggest the latter option). I would then add notes respective of the player's cooperation.

I hope those answers are sufficient.
Also, thanks for all your comments.

1. Yeah, looks awesome.
2. I hoped on more detail here but good so far.
3. I for one would consider it ic for both sides and not job ban unless it is an issue among multiple rounds. Because in theory it is not even an issue caused by him being a squad leader. The same could have happened with him as a pfc/medic/engineer etc.
The what would his options be is a bit unfair of me to ask as they are almost infinite. It depends a bit on how much out of the box you can think but some examples that come up in my head are: The aCO can overrule him, he can get a squad made to get attachments for him, and in theory, even an ic fax has a chance to work. To many things and a bit unfair of me to ask.

Anyways here is my formal +1
