Deanthelis - Coder

Post by Deanthelis » 13 Sep 2018, 21:54

Byond ID: Deanthelis

Age: 23

Gender: Man

How would you define yourself? (Coder, Mapper, Spriter): Coder

If Coder, what languages?
Java, Javascript, C#, C++, AutoIt. The most actual training I have is in Java; I took for years of courses in high school focused on it. Oh, and some C++ training in college, though I dropped out to enlist in the Navy after a semester and haven't gone back yet.

Light HTML and CSS. Yes, I know those aren't programming, but BYOND is basically IE7 so I think it applies.

Any previous experience developing with SS13?

I was an administrator on Paradise for a while. 2015 or so, I don't remember clearly; it wasn't an overly positive experience, but I learned a good deal. Didn't ever contribute directly, really, but I learned enough from the Paradise coding crew to understand how most of it works - at least, enough to explain it in simple terms to others.

Proof of any previous or current work:
Most of my best work is also proprietary. That isn't to imply it's particularly good, only that I got paid to write it on a company's behalf, and don't own the right to distribute it.

That being said, here's some stuff I've written for my Roll20 games. It's the most recent stuff I've done and I don't have to go dig it up.

Monster Mash.js

A Roll20 API tool for creating Pathfinder monsters quickly and with as much or as little randomness as desired. Work in progress and never intended to be shared; I believe in putting my best and worst feet forward.

https://pastebin.com/9Qdc0rQt

Char Setup.js

A much simpler Roll20 API tool for players to quickly assign some basic character stats to their 'token', the object that represents their Pathfinder character, and handles their vision attributes in conjunction with an external tool.

https://pastebin.com/3EjfhsyC

40KHitHelper.js

A simple tool for the Roll20 API to assist in managing hits and critical damage for Warhammer 40,000 tabletop roleplaying games. 99% mine.

https://pastebin.com/YY9LFgHD

Deathwatch-Black Crusade, an HTML/CSS character sheet for Roll20 that integrates the rules for Dark Heresy 2nd. Edition into Deathwatch and corrects a number of bugs with the original Black Crusade sheet it was based on. 20% mine, presented as proof I can successfully contribute to a project I didn't start.

How well do you know Git?
I have used it mostly-successfully before to do basic things, but I am no Git wizard. I can commit, pull, commit merges, push, repeat all day long, but I'd need instruction for anything more complicated.

Here's a link to a repository containing all of the above scripts to prove I can do basic git stuff.

Your primary job is server development, not policing the server. You may be given Moderator-level of access but you should *not* be invoking any administrative actions unless there are no moderators or Admins online. Do you understand?

Yes. Has anyone ever answered anything other than Yes to this?

Anything else you'd like to add?

Spooky told me to do this like three weeks ago.

I'm applying because I want to help kill bugs that ruin fun and maybe expand the lore a little. I don't have any grand illusions of competence or plans to revolutionize gameplay or whatever it is people think to do when they apply for this.

I have a hobbyist's code experience, administrative experience, more than a year of play-time on CM (and at least four with SS13 at large), and I have a vested interest in seeing this server continue to be a source of entertainment for me and the people I've enjoyed playing with along the way.

I'm tired of just reporting bugs and making suggestions on the gitlab. I want to help. If I can do some of the work to keep CM going, hooray. If I'm not up to par, well, all I've lost is a half-hour writing this.

Dean is a great guy, and would be an excellent fit to the team in my opinion.
Commander Councilman. Along with Takethehot56, Bancrose, Dr.Lance, and Frans_Feiffer. PM me or any of them for inquiries about Commander.
