Cakey - Developer Application

Post by Cakey » 16 Nov 2018, 13:00

Byond ID: Cakey

Age: 21

Gender: Male

How would you define yourself? (Coder, Mapper, Spriter):
With regards to SS13 dev, primarily a mapper, but capable of both spriting and coding.

If Coder, what languages?:
- Primary language is C++, as taught through university course for computer games programming.
- Also capable of JS, C#.
- Experienced in DM code as well.

Any previous experience developing with SS13?:
Initially began developing for Apollo station as a mapper, which expanded out to becoming a jack of all, creating both code and sprites for the repository where necessary. Apollo has since disbanded as a server. I now play on Baystation, and only contribute through their repository as a player contributor only, not as a member of the developer team.

Proof of any previous or current work:
Cakestaiton: A station I made for Apollo on my own:

My contributions to the Bay repository:

My Github page:
https://github.com/CakeQ

How well do you know Git?
I work with Git on a day to day basis, running with both the Github client and Git command line to handle commits, commit squashing, commit conflicts, branch rebasing and anything needed to handle a project.

Your primary job is server development, not policing the server. You may be given Moderator-level of access but you should *not* be invoking any administrative actions unless there are no moderators or Admins online. Do you understand? (Yes/No)

Yes.

Anything else you'd like to add?
I was told by Awan that my application would be welcomed, which is what convinced me to apply.

Impressive application!

If accepted, is there any specific area you'd be interested in focusing on? Developing new features, bugfixes, map tweaking, making new maps, etc? What would you like to add to the game?

Pieachu, thanks a lot for the praise.
I'd like to say I'm most comfortable with mapping, as I do a lot of that back and forth listening to feedback, tweaking certain areas of maps, and bringing out complete maps. Aside from that though I really do enjoy working on spriting from time to time, as well as any new and interesting ideas that require code to implement. If you've seen the recent direction Baystation has taken with sprites (walls, doors, windows, machinery), most of that was done by myself.
I think if I was given a focus on being able to bring mapping changes to the server (Even bringing out new maps entirely if possible) with the potential to work on small sprite related features it would probably utilise my abilities well.
Hope that answers your question.

Can you Map me an UPP hangar?

It should be 25x15 or 15x25, house 2-4 fighter planes (2x2 size), have comm-tower with dispatcher booth, place for signalers to pickup their gear, markings on the floor that shows where fighter-planes should move.

It should have an exit to runway, if you wanna map runway - more power to you.

Hi Neth,
I'd be willing to give it a shot, though I'm not entirely sure what you're asking me to use. What resources are you expecting this to be made in?

Cell paper will do

Otherwise any stations tileset will do too

I'm pretty much interested in the outline and utilitarian look of the hangar, since it is UPP and they don't like waste of space. The location is on the planet

Here you go. I didn't have any model for the fighters to use so for placeholder I used 2x2 painted squares (with the blue being forward-facing), and while you asked for a 15x25 sized building I wasn't happy with making an entirely box-shaped structure so opted in for splitting it up a little for shape variety. Only used the essentials to show design here, so no lights/wall machinery/etc. used just for clarification if you notice they're missing. Key thing to note is that I wanted to bear in mind entry and exit points for the purpose of gameplay, as well as choke points/defensive areas to make the building itself good to play around in.

If you have any questions please throw them my way and I'll write up a reply.

Can't vote, but I must comment:
I played on your Cakestation a long while back, around one or maybe two years ago a little bit.
The map was really intuitive, or should I say, that it felt really natural playing there. It was unique enough, but felt familiar. Other coding jazz is not my expertise, but seems convincing.
All in all, great map, great experience, hope ye get added!
Here is my +1 that sadly will not have any concrete influence backing your app.

Will comment as an unsolicited reference.

The amount of work Cakey has done for Baystation has been amazing, and the mapping work was always top notch.
10/10 would make a great addition to your team.

After discussion at our most recent dev meeting the team has elected to accept this application with the role of Mapper. I will contact you privately sometime tomorrow to straighten out the details, permissions, etc.
