Abbysynth - Dev App

Post by Abbysynth » 05 May 2015, 20:58

Alright, on the suggestion of Unknown I'm applying for dev. Coder, specifically.

Byond ID:

Abbysynth

Age:

Late 30s. I'm so old.

How would you define yourself? (Coder, Mapper, Spriter):

Coder, primarily, though I've done all three pretty often. Spriter least of all, I am terrible at spriting.

If Coder, what languages?

I first learned to code using QBASIC and Turbo Pascal back in ye old 90's, then moved on to ansi C, C++, Oracle, and Java. My ex-husband taught me to code (though I'm better than him at it now).

For many years I coded in Ansi C writing and developing MUDs; text-based Telnet games that were the ancestors of all modern-day MMOs. I wrote, adminned, and hosted several for the local Institute for the Blind, basing the games around players using screen readers, which is a great niche market even today. That was quite a few years ago though.

Any previous experience developing with SS13?

I first started BYOND coding maybe 6 years ago, first for LLA, then NoX, though I've done some minor work for smaller servers for friends. Most of what I've done has been bugfixes, as that was what was needed, though I've done work on a few major projects (I helped with the LLA ice planet project, though I think it was scrapped after the DDoS).

Proof of any previous or current work:

That's kind of the problem; I haven't done any coding in a few years and I don't have any of my old projects - they're either in use by servers so I can't share them, or I tossed them ages ago when I blew a hard drive. If you need proof, ask me to code something as a test and I'll whip it up for you. I'm sure you're also familiar with my mapping, just see the ground map I posted on the general board. I'm a GREAT mapper (and so humble); having knowledge of code really helps particularly with designing powernets and atmos systems, which a lot of mappers have trouble with, and designing my own workarounds for neat things I want to add.

How well do you know Git?

I've used Git quite a lot; I've been a minor dev in the Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead roguelike project for some time which focuses heavily on using an open Github (You should all try it, it's a fantastic single player game). Before Git existed I used TortoiseSVN and other various SVN tools.

Your primary job is server development, not policing the server. You may be given Moderator-level of access but you should *not* be invoking any administrative actions unless there are no moderators or admins online. Do you understand? (Yes/No)

I'm down with that, and I think that's a perfectly reasonable policy to have. Coders shouldn't involve themselves too heavily in the game, just enough to understand player issues, balance problems, potential bugs, and so on. A lot of bugs are not posted to forums for months after they're discovered.

Anything else you'd like to add?

I have never been banned (well, not seriously) on any server in all the years I've been playing SS13, and I've never had any dev team complain about my coding; I comment VERY frequently. You also never have to worry about the code going missing, or mechanics being given to players, I certainly understand that trust and discretion are essential when doing any kind of group code work. I'd primarily love to get my ground map implemented in the game, either pre or post-alpha, but I'm totally down just to take some of the weight off other coders in terms of bugfixes and minor changes - I'd never add or change things without first discussing it with headstaff, and I'm not the sort of person who just starts a project and then abandons it halfway.

Reminder: After his application being denied. I've suggested him to apply to be a Dev.

Ok, sorry this took so long to reply to, I had a pretty hectic weekend.

App looks good.

Only thing is, if your going to add/change something, talk with me or rahlzel, our headstaff aren't part of the the development process. I'll get you added as a coder, once you respond here that your still interested.

Yup, still interested. I'm not about to do any sort of changes without prior approval, that's for sure. Glad to be on board!

Alrighty, I'll process this when I get home. I'm teaching my class right now, or rather, holding the lab open so students can finish their finals :Z

Simple. Give everyone a 0 on their grade.
