Swordhill - Moderator Application

Post by Tetsip » 20 Jul 2015, 20:34

Byond ID:
Swordhill

Colonial Marines Character:
Argus Macneil

Age:
23

Gender:
Male

Timezone:
Central US Time

On average, how many hours are you available per week to moderate?
Almost every hour of the day, my job is a graveyard shift. (( Midnight-6:00AM ))
Specifically:
2PM-11PM most days.
10AM-3AM on weekends.

Do you have any previous experience in being staff (not just SS13)?
I've staffed for a large number of Garry's Mod servers in the past, though honestly I couldn't stand the community in general.
I have no experience being SS13 staff, and would have to learn the tools.

Did you play any of the previous Colonial Marine servers?
I have not played previous Colonial Marine servers.

Have you had an application to Colonial Marines or New Eden denied before?
No.

Are you currently a staff member elsewhere (not just SS13)? If so, where?
I am not a staff member in any community currently.

Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on Colonial Marines?
No.

If a player was shooting everyone in briefing at round start how would you deal with the situation?
Questions of this nature are circumstantial. However, if it's during the briefing at the beginning of the round I can be almost certain that no RP ground was established for what is happening. If the antagonist is easily identifiable, I would adminkill their character to contain the situation before contacting them through PMs. After a length conversation, I would ban them for a timeframe depending on the severity of how many people were affected, and how the player handled being 'admin-sat'. Griefing is common knowledge, and is inexcusable. A player who griefs obviously has not read the rules, because it is the very first one.

You notice that a xeno is breaching the Nostromo and is unable to seal it with resin. How would you deal with this and what punishment would you give for a first offender?
If it wasn't too bad, I would wait and see if the alien reported his mistake. If it was bad, I would attempt to seal it right away. Depending on whether or not the player reports his own mistake I would contact them via PM. If I have no reason to believe that the breach was intentional and malicious, I would warn them and likely remove their alien from play by killing it. After all, dying as an alien is only temporary as long as the queen has a supply of of bodies. If I have reason to believe that the breach was intentional and/or malicious, I would ban the player for a time period depending on the severity of the damage the breach caused.

The marines want the nuke codes to detonate the Nostromo because they claim they are losing too many marines. There are currently 4 aliens and 20 marines in your /who. What do you do?
If contacted via Central Command messages, I send an IC response with some typical corporate reason I cannot give them the codes. Only head staff can dish out the codes in the first place. If I am contacted in an adminhelp I will explain that I cannot hand out the nuclear codes. Worst comes to worse I make a Central COmmand announcement ordering the marines to clear out the rest of the infestation without nuclear assistance.

A Sulaco Medic has made several napalm grenades and hands them out to marines. One of the marines throws the grenade into Logistics. There are no admins or other moderators online. What do you do?
This is complicated. First I handle the more immediate napalm issue by contacting the player who threw the grenade in question. I look for a motive. If there was a a clear motive such as a backed-up mutiny, or an IC confrontation between the RO and the marine, and the action in fact enhances a stagnating round, I may let it slide. However if that is not the case, I may punish the player for griefing after asking where he got the grenade in the first place. Upon finding out a doctor made it for him, I move on to the doctor once the punishment is issued. I ask why he made the grenades and then inform him that medics are supposed to use their chemicals to make medicine, not weapons, as this is for the researcher to do as his leisure. Depending on the number of grenades handed out and the attitude of the player I may temporarily jobban them, or ban the player for a small number of hours for powergaming chemical weapons as a medic.

What would you do if a player started to talk about the things he did to your mom last night?
Take it. Honestly it's a game and I really shouldn't be surprised by that kind of behavior. If I do get irritated or offended by it, I would politely ask the action to cease in OOC. However, if he continues to be offensive, I would request another member of staff to handle it. I refuse to participate in a situation that will make me vulnerable to bias, and so another member of staff should handle it.

Any additional information you'd like to add?
I will confess that if made a trial moderator it will take some time for me to get my bearings dealing with players and learning the verbs associated with my rank. I ask that if accepted that you be patient with me and help me become a better staff member. If I make a mistake, please correct me, because knowing I made a mistake is the only way I'll learn from them.

I was Charles Young before the name change. Charles was a tool, so now Argus the dwarf-bearded baldie has taken over.

As good as mine. Answers are pretty good, very satisfactory. Just need a bit more activity on the forums and you'll be set!

I like the answers! But as lost said more posts wouldn't hurt.

Anywho, I believe I dealt with you once in an in-game issue, while this ended in me having to ban you for ~3 hours. However, this situation left me feeling positively towards you as you were understanding that yes you broke a rule and should've talked to us beforehand overall dealing with it in a mature way. You have my +1.

i quiet like this answer, although this is general always considered as girefing as there is absolutely no reason to do this

with this it is best not to wait, but players tend to never report there mistakes (nine months on staff) the best to do is to give them a moment and if they walk off PM them to seal it.

I still feel bad about that. Like I said in my additional notes, I'm not a veteran to this community, and I predict I'll make both mistakes as a player and as staff, but I am prepared to learn from them.

Oh my god I LOVE your signatures... Anyway yes this application seems rather nice and alot of positive feedback. +1 I will give this some time for a bit more feedback.
Why am I still here again?
Just your Former Head Staff stalking around from time to time I suppose.

I think the application is very well written. The character name is familiar and it doesn't evoke memories of rampant (Or any kind of) idiocy.

All in all, a +1 from me.
TLDR: Go back and read it. I spent time writing that, ya know.

So I just read this. What does that mean for me as a player whose application was posted prior to this ruling? I would like to think that the overwhelmingly positive reviews despite the age of the forum accounts might be worth a consideration given the fact it was made before this official ruling, but in the end that is a decision for the head of the staff to make with the upper-management.

Thats up to SAS, but I don't think you have anything to worry about as the point of that ruling was to stop terrible apps from brand new players.

Plus staff that are not active on the forums will be removed anyway, forums are an important tool for staff members, dealing with player complaints, responding to admin complaints on yourself, ban appeals, staff private discussions etc.

Also new rule for moderator applications was announced recently:

"Second, a new requirement has been made for Moderator Applications - your forum account must be at least 2 weeks old. We've had an influx of brand new people submitting Staff applications when they've only been around for a day. This needs to stop."

Yeah, I caught that in the above post. My question is because of the fact my application slipped in before the ruling, will it still be judged as a normal application or will it auto-deny with the new ruling? Like Mord said,
Up to SAS I suppose.
