Sovieteer - Moderator Application

Post by Sovieteer » 18 Aug 2015, 18:06

Byond ID: Sovieteer

Colonial Marines Character: Karl 'Sokolov' Broskov

Age: 16

Gender: Male

Timezone: GMT - 4:00 (Around New York)

On average, how many hours are you available per week to moderate?

The schedule varies for me, honestly. It depends on the internet connections and the given events. School starts again for me soon, in my junior year.
My internet is based off of a Kyocera Rise phone, to which is tethered to my computer via USB. An application allows my data to be used as internet for the computer. As such, I have usually 2G speeds, and rarely 3G. As of this time, I can moderate most of the day and partially the evening in my current time-zone.

Do you have any previous experience in being staff (not just SS13)?

I have experience from moderating on the Unbound Travels server, which was a medium to heavy roleplay server. The rules there were more stricter than those on the Colonial Marines server, and it may reflect positively and contribute greatly to moderation on Colonial Marines. Sadly, I resigned from Unbound Travels as soon as the population transferred to the Aphelion Project. U.T. lost their way, and I left before they had corrupted me.

Did you play any of the previous Colonial Marine servers?

I played Colonial when the server was known for the NMV Sulaco dealing with the infestation on the NSS Nostromo. I've played the server ever since, as the diversity and the mechanics of the game astounded me and caught my attention. I enjoy the server immensely and I don't find myself to stop playing. I can actually immerse myself in the game-play and have fun while doing it.

Have you had an application to Colonial Marines or New Eden denied before?

I have not applied to any Colonial Marines or New Eden servers before.

Are you currently a staff member elsewhere (not just SS13)? If so, where?

I was a staff member on the Unbound Travels server. However, I have since resigned.

Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on Colonial Marines?

No.

If a player was shooting everyone in briefing at round start how would you deal with the situation?

I would private message the player to stop. If they did not cease, I would use the freeze verb (considering it's baystation code) or ask an administrator to freeze them. If they immediately log off, it would be a ban. The action is considered grief-y behavior and will not be tolerated by the staff team or the server as a whole. Punishment would be handed out carefully and accurately.

You notice that a xeno is breaching the Nostromo and is unable to seal it with resin. How would you deal with this and what punishment would you give for a first offender?

I would first try to plug up the breach with the appropriate verb, or if unable to do it myself, contact an administrator to do so. I would speak to the player and ask them what they were looking to accomplish, why they did it, and ask what caused them to be unable to seal the breach with resin themselves. Depending on the response, the offense would result from a ban or a warning with a note posted.

The marines want the nuke codes to detonate the Nostromo because they claim they are losing too many marines. There are currently 4 aliens and 20 marines in your /who. What do you do?

Well, since some players have a notorious problem with using OOC knowledge ICly (metagaming), I would try to place an announcement reporting a direct order to eliminate the alien threat and try to include an approximate number of aliens left with advance sensors included in the report. If this was not possible, we would simply state over an announcement that no codes would be given and they're on their own, or tell them to do their best. The nuclear explosive is to be used as a last resort, and if the marines outnumber the aliens, the battle can be fought and won quite easily, if they use their brains.

A Sulaco Medic has made several napalm grenades and hands them out to marines. One of the marines throws the grenade into Logistics. There are no admins or other moderators online. What do you do?

First I would contact administrators and/or other moderators through any means necessary and try to either request assistance and to come online, or relay a message and save attack logs/admin logs for later use. Then, I would ask the marine where he got the napalm grenade from and why he threw it into logistics. If the player doesn't respond/disconnects, immediate ban. If they are cooperative, I would take a look at the suggested route and take the suggested action. For the medic, I would privately message them stating they are a medic and they should act like such. Only researchers should have the proper knowledge on how to make any grenade in general. A job-ban or regular ban may be issued, depending on the severity of the mistake.

What would you do if a player started to talk about the things he did to your mom last night?

Honestly, I'd ignore it or make it fun of it. Example: "You did? So that's why my trailer was shaking last night." If it were over OOC, OOC would immediately be muted and the player talked to for providing such lewd and derogatory insults over the OOC channel.

Any additional information you'd like to add?

Skype is an issue for me at this time, as it does not run when I play BYOND. However, when I'm on it by itself and the internet is at least adequate, I can effectively chat. However, my mic will lag out extremely. I know the internet is an issue and probably a deal-breaker here, but I at least want a chance to prove myself for the staff team. If this application should be denied, I accept the verdict fully and would not pursue the thread further.

I am a bit worried about your general activity since you only have six Forum posts.. And you've been part of the forum since February.. Also How long would you consider these bans to be?

I don't like the answer about ignoring him or make fun of it, you're supposed to remain proffessional and you should have muted the player from ahelps. And if someone is shooting up briefing, you freeze them right then and there, ask them why they did it, if the response is reasonable, let them go and have them face IC repercaussions. If they are shooting it up, do not give a reasonable answer, you tell them what rules they broke and ban them. Ask through an announcement if you were shot by the griefer and did not retaliate, and heal them, if they did, however, let them get IC treatment.

Relevant information:

(9:12:54 pm) Sovieteer: In response to the forum post of my application: Your ways are aggressive, and I learned not to be aggressive. Thus, I will remain resonable and calm, and not simply take immediate action.
(9:16:22 pm) RehabBaron: I was not being aggressive, I was pointing out flaws in your post (I was confused about Sovieteers message, I thought he was referring to my post, not the contents of them). As of now, I am neutral.
(9:17:31 pm) Sovieteer: You ask them to cooperate, and if they don't, then you freeze them. It's what we call in the guard "Rules of Engagement."
(9:18:30 pm) RehabBaron: This isn't the guard. If someone is shooting up briefing, you freeze first and ask questions later, because freezing doesn't hurt anyone but the person you freeze do. This stops the amount of harm they can do.
(9:22:46) Sovieteer: If they harm anymore people if they are asked first, it means they won't cooperate and it justifies the punishment. Rejuvination verb exists for a reason.
(9:26:06) RehabBaron: Your job as moderator is to get as little people hurt in the first place. If you don't freeze first, more people are hurt, and more complaints. The second you see someone has intent to grief, you stop them.

Updates as this occurs.

He gets a -1 from me, he has blured lines between this and reality/other servers. In my opinion, he has too little experience here and he thinks because he was an admin on another server he can be here with little experience.

This make's you look like an asshole Rehab, he privately messaged you and really didn't say anything wrong other than discussing his view on things.
I don't understand why you're shitting up his application.

Onto the Application, it's a bit weak and some question's are completely wrong.... you're activity is low community wise for obvious reason's. Neutral solely because you seem competent enough to hold your own.

I'd like to note that the higher ups decide if you're accepted, not normal players. Although their opinion may influence us (mod and heads). The heads also have the final say on any application and are the ones who accept or deny aps.

Anyway, I say -1 personally. Low activity, no real consistent schedule, and the answers were kinda mediocre.

In response to the forum activity: There's really nothing for me to post. No ideas, no bugs other than one. I play Colonial frequently, and the fact I'm judged purely on activity aboard here disturbs me personally.

In response to the negativity I'm getting from Rehab: I'm simply blocking this user from my BYOND and anything else possible. I do not appreciate getting attacked aggressively when I simply state and share my views in a civil manner, and I ask for the negativeness to stop.

This is all I have to say and I shall not post another comment unless directed to by Management.

You can always defend yourself. Being active on both the forums and in game is important to being a staff member.

Don't worry too much about Rehab's comments he clearly has some form of grudge over you and is targeting a specific person/application because he hasn't posted on any other applications recently.

I haven't seen much of you yet and the application isn't the best, Neutral for now.

I've contacted Unbound gotten a decent reference.

I'll hold off on this for the moment, to get more community feedback.

Just.... Stop it right there.

In any case I've seen soviet and I can say that he honestly has the best in mind, I've never seen him be unreasonable or overtly hostile.

Unbound is massivly different than CM. I don't think this is the right server for him to staff on.

I'm taking into consideration what Lost said on defense.

Unbound Travels is indeed a different server, but moderation tactics are still massively alike. Again, as I stated before, being tactful and giving people a chance to prove themselves as well as coming off as unbiased and some-what friendly allows for people not to be scared of the staff member and to receive a mutual understanding from staff-member to player, which can result in both sides being seen (who did wrong, why they would take action against you for doing such, a look as to why you did it from their perspective).

As a moderator, we moderate, yes. However, I do feel as though we can be more friendly, tactful, and still get things done effectively.

I'm going to put this out there: I was the head admin for UT before I left thus, I trained many of the people there and the people that succeeded me which means that Soviet should have a similar style to my own.

I'll go out on a limb and say that I probably did pretty well, the experience is what matters, not the type of server that the staff member came from.

I'm going to say approved.

I'm going to take the "If it doesn't work out we can remove you" route.

So, APPROVED and set as trialmod.

If there are issues, they will be dealt with.
