How to Defib or Live, I say, Live!

Post by nerocavalier » 08 Feb 2017, 11:26

Alright, so some people still don't know how to Defibs work and while I can spend forever complaining, it's better to make a guide and help people learn on how to get them to work.

Standard Defibbing Procedure:
  • 1. Find a corpse with the defib symbol on them. Normally, they have a black line and a yellow symbol or black one. If it's a skull, then don't bother.
    2. Move said corpse into a safe location where you can undress them and redress them. Preferably somewhere you won't die with your patient.
    3. Scan them immediately preferably while moving.
    4. Whichever has more damage, take out that kit (if burns, burn kit, if brute trauma kit). Take off their armor while you're treating them.
    5. Stop everything once it's below 200 and defib them now.
    6. Defib them already.
6b. Apply inaprovaline then other medicine.
    7. REDRESS THEM.
    8. Medevac them to a safe location so they can get surgery or heal away from danger.
Here's some things that'll prevent people from being defibbed:
  • Husking i.e massive burn damage from either spitter or being in a boiler cloud. Examine them and if they look like gray zombies, don't bother with these.
Chestbursting. There's a massive bloody wound on their chest, don't bother trying.
Decapping. They don't have a head, move on.
Zombie. They look like a dead zombie and will gnaw on you if they wake up and you're around.
The Defib actually tells you information about your patient so keep them in mind:
  • Patient is DNR. They disconnected. You can check back on them but it's unlikely.
Over 200 volts: As it says, take off their armor.
Vital signs are weak: Damage is over 200, reduce every damage possible with adv. trauma and burn kits then keep defibbing until they're alive.
Patient's soul has almost departed means that they're not in the body at the moment. Don't stop defibbing.
Fun things about defibbing:

If your patient is still above 200 after applying adv. kits, you can still try to defib them because with each successful defib attempt, their damage goes down. However, if it's over 300 it's extremely unlikely you'll be able to revive them in time.

There's a delay after turning on your defib, keep it on in your bag and then spamclick the heck out of it in order to get best results.

Your patients don't automatically get their things back on, for the love of [Insert deity of your choice], please put their things back on if you have time.

Being bumped, or switching hands WILL cancel defibbing. Try not to have this happen.

The grace period after the skull appears is gone since defibbing takes longer now.

Defibbing someone and then them dying again will reset the timer. Do this on people with lung ruptures and quickclot OD if you want them to last long enough to make it back for treatment.

How you can help your Medic.
  • 1. Drag corpses that don't have a massive gaping hole in them to medics.
    2. If they say "Not defibabble" then go to step 6.
    3. If they start taking off the clothes, make sure the area is secure. If not, tell them to move or protect them while they defib. No, seriously, protect that medic.
    4. Provide CPR if you can by clicking on someone while aimed at mouth on help intent. It'll help prevent them from dying again.
    5. Dress the patient once they seem stable and no longer at risk of dying.
    6. Take their dog tags and move on.
Quickclot OD and you or I didn't give you permission to die.
Yeah, it happens but it can be fixed if the corpse is on the Sulaco. Yeah, they're probably going to lose their things but defib them every three-four minutes before the timer runs out and rush them to the nearest SAFEST sleeper whether that's Meddome or Medbay on the Sulaco.

Don't waste time, grab that corpse and shove it into a sleeper. Now start a dialysis, wait a bit, then pop it out, cram an antitoxin pill down their throats and apply tricordrazine and dex+. Now defib until they're alive again.

Of course, make sure QC is below the OD threshold so they don't die.
Don't defib too much otherwise toxins will overwhelm the brute damage and make your life much harder.

Defib as soon as possible. If you can bring someone back right there and then, then do it. Don't wait because the timer can run out sooner than you expect it. If you can't rush to the nearest person that can while calling over the radio for a defib.

If you know more useful information, share it or yell at me in big, scary letters.

I was once OD'd with QC (on the planet, at the bridge) and ghetto detoxed with repeated applications of defibrillator and dylovene. I was revived from the dead something like 38 times all the way to Medbay Sulaco, with the QC still in my blood instantly killing me every time. Finally in Medbay they drained and refilled most of my blood and then defibbed again and I stayed alive.

So, not always RIP..

so, question about the defib. If I die and get defibbed, does it reset the timer?

If you get defibbed successfully then die straight away, then yes, it resets the timer. That's how we did it for Abbysynth and managed to rescue a QC OD patient.

And I can't stress this enough. Two medics shouldn't be working on the same corpse/patient. It takes attention away from other dead/wounded and runs the risk of accidentally ODing the corpse on medicines with low OD thresholds. Like QC. Too many times I've seen two medics apply QC at the same time.

The redressing step is by far the MOST IMPORTANT

I've had three spec rounds ruined by medics who will strip, defib, and place my uniform on just to leave my harness, smartgun and power pack behind.

Just thinking of it makes me salty

Seeing that there's now a sleeper planetside, you no longer have to frantically rush someone from planetside to medbay on the Sulaco.

Also updated that QC part a bit.
Troublesome, as usual.

Agreed, if you're going to be a lazy fuck and leave people's stuff behind or not redress them, get body bags and place both the person and their belongings in it.
You will never be as bad as the baldie who picked up a tactical shotgun while a hunter was pouncing on top of a CMO for 4 seconds, with his only response being to pace around before being decap'd by said hunter. You are not Brett Kimple, and you never will be. You are not the reason why I regular MP.

This is a unknown fact for a lot of new Medics, but DO NOT GIVE UP.

Every time you defib above 200, their number of damage goes down by about 5 per defib.

So if they have 220 damage, DO NOT GIVE UP!

Keep defibbing because that 220 will go below 200, slowly but surely every time you defib them. This is an effective method of bringing back fucked up marines that just died recently and have damage over 200.

270+ is around the range where you're going to need another defib if you're determined to bring back someone after applying all the adv. kits to them.

What are you supposed to do if someone's been defibbed multiple times but keeps dying immediately?

Treat the cause of their death if they keep dying.

If it's quickclot OD, rush to either meddome or medbay and do a dialysis on them. Then apply dylovene and tricordrazine and defib again. If it's oxygen loss, apply dex+ and peridaxon. If it's random brute or burns, then apply bicaridine or kelotane respectively.

If it's blood loss, hook them up to an IV or syringe yourself if you're blood type compatible and inject the blood into them until it's above 60%. Alternatively, apply food.

It's entirely possible for brute damage to be so high that someone promptly suffocates upon being defibbed.

Thank you, next question, would I get boinked for telling someone in LOOC to remember to put me in a body bag with my belongings if I live to fight another day?

Technically you did mention this, but I don't feel like you've made it very clear.

You can feed dead people chems and have them start acting immediately once the patient is defibbed, helps a lot when trying to keep people alive and to save supplies and energy.

Note that the chems won't show up on scanners until they're revived, so watch out for ODs (lost a patient last time I played medic because another medic saw the internal bleeding on the guy I was healing and decided to try helping without talking to me).

You can also feed them water and potassium (no more than 5u of each or else the explosion will be violent) to clear their system.

Yep. Adding chems is pretty handy until it turns out they went braindead on you so it's why I didn't really go into detail beyond mentioning it as a pre and post defib thing.

My number ONE RULE when assisting another Medic is
1. Dress there wounds ONLY (adv. Trama, splints, etc. Otherwise OD on QC will happen.)

But even then, 2 medics on one person should rarely happen. Maybe if the patient's condition is Major. But better just to find another patient.
Good Defib guide.

It does. When you see that grey skull, you have little time before they can go brain dead.
