How to not be an shitler.

Post by Honkintuga » 30 Dec 2017, 12:01

WARNING: THIS TEXT WAS NOT MADE BY ME, IT WAS MODERATOR ROBOTONIC WHO DID THIS, ALL CREDIT GOES TO HIM, I JUST FELT THIS WOULD BE USEFUL AND POSTED IT ON GUIDES SECTION.

Guide:
Whatever server you play on next, thoroughly read the rules. There's always subtle differences between how a server's staff team will react to 'proper' escalation or self-defence, powergaming, and venting. On CM you'll get extra time on a ban for being rude towards a staffmember, on Paradise you'd get a permanent ban, and since every person has their own view on whether to listen or whether to ban someone who's venting you could have a situation in which one admin warns you and another would ban you for the same level of venting on the exact same server.

If an admin is speaking with you, number one thing is don't lie. It's an obvious rule but admins usually get annoyed when someone lies to them, it implies they care about what they've done just enough to waste their time time but not enough to admit they were wrong or atleast ask what they did wrong. Being receptive and understanding to what you're being spoken to about is the number one way to prevent a ban and instead turn it into a warning. Admins have usually been moderating on a server for atleast a few months up to a year or more so when they're up against someone who just doesn't care they often drop the hammer and just hope they don't get themselves permanently banned later on because they're (most of the time) sick of people lying.

You might be there to get the MP's to try arresting you and cause a manhunt, to make briefing run differently rather than the same boring thing, or break a seemingly minor rule to get access; but everyone else is probably coming on to the game for just a quick round. Getting shot, killed, and trapped behind enemy lines whilst an escalation issue is being sorted out so they can't be revived anymore destroys their game. A fledgling XO player trying to do a briefing where people are starting fistfights left-right-and-centre can irrevocably alter the course of the round. A guy hopping on the server for a quick game, slipping on lube, and being slashed to death or gibbed by a DS as they're stunned throws them out the round entirely.

Basically, the game may be a jenga tower of obscure coding from 2003 with several weird communities, weird-ass rules depending on the server, and often times toxic players, but the one thing which usually annoys the administration of a server the most is screwing with or screwing over other people's games just for the hell of it. Adding to it, making it interesting, they like that. But they often take a harder stance towards greytidey actions on a game.

Roleplaying is an interesting thing because if you go along with it for a while people usually tag along causing some big thing out of something small. Combat and running away from security is great, but so is going along with syndicate operatives pretending to be the kings of the Interstellar Space Jam of 2556 or on more serious servers syndicate operatives pretending to be a stranded crew in need of rescue, for example.

This should be the beginning of the quickstart guide.
