After getting examples, doing some looking, and considering what the best way to handle these types of images would be, I've come to the following conclusions:

    1. As I alluded to in my original post, this would be difficult, if not nigh on impossible to enforce. There are too many images to police each individual one given the effort put into researching the examples I was given. The three examples given altogether took roughly 10-15 minutes to thoroughly find information on, even though I knew exactly what I was looking for.
    2. All tested images were not reverse-image searchable, thus their "fetish" versions aren't something one can stumble upon too accidentally. 2/3 examples were custom images the users in question had made for them, or drew themselves, not from existing material.
    3. I had originally thought perhaps the avatars mentioned would have been cropped out of far more explicit material than I'd actually found (like from a screen capture of a pornographic clip), but this was not the case. The content found was relatively mild by comparison. Notably, no source images I was able to locate included any kind of genitalia, though one image did get close.

The only way I was able to find results that contained the sort of content mentioned was by specifically looking for the individuals on other places around the net, and checking results that contained the sort of content that would carry "fetish" image sources. These were not things someone could stumble on accidentally without going to websites that already cater to such content in the instances I found. Thus, I would call this less a problem of the avatars, and more one of users having the same names across different platforms, with some potentially containing NSFW content. That said, I'm not looking to be the internet police here, or judge what people use the same username for in other places online.

I believe the best way to wrap up this post is this: If you go Googling random usernames, at some point you will reach mature content somewhere. Not everyone leads an entirely SFW online life, and there's nothing wrong with that. The only time that should be offensive within the confines of our community is if NSFW content is overtly displayed. So if we look at your avatar and can instantly say "That's porn," with no need to do further digging then we might have a problem. However, as long as I've been around in CM, I can't say I've ever seen an instance where that has been the case.

TLDR: We can't possibly police every avatar on the forum for the possibility it might have an NSFW source unless it's obvious. Nor can we police what sort of content you might find if you Google random users and click on NSFW websites they might partake in.
