Since a lot of people complain about 'meta-gaming' by relying on previously gained knowledge of maps, if we opened up map making to the general user we could have some 20 or so new maps produced in a short amount of time.
This gets around the difficulty of coding procedurally generated maps to add diversity and spice to the user experience. The marine briefing period could involve giving out a map of the new area, just like it would have been in the movies.
Some maps may be lemons, others surprisingly good. The point is, there would be such a wealth of maps available that no party would confidently know that location of a hive, the regions of the brain allocated for new learning will be constantly lit up, the gaming experience more alive.
A lot of games do this to great success. It doesn't require any knowledge of coding- it is just the artistic placement of terrain and artifacts. Each map would be reviewed for play-ability of course.
So, is this a reasonable idea or should we stick to the same 2-3 maps that we continue to play to death?
