M39 does it for me as Medic. A Shotgun would probably be best, but as Medic I don't have the space to keep more than 1 and a half tube of buckshot on me, at best, which makes it not worthwhile to me. I keep with the M39 and grab extended mags.

mk2
mk2 with underbarrel shotgun
mk2 with underbarrel flamer
m39 is what I mainly get big kills with but if you dont take a mag harn shotgun you might as well just walk into the hive and cap yourself because you have no shot if you get tackle dragged or eaten
M44 with Heavy not being on that Poll is a sin to dedicated support.
Guns? What are those?
I joke but it is surprising how many round as a medic I end up with only a knife.
To answer your question, M39 generally works best for me. As Lilpenpusher said above it's about ammo capacity for me as a medic.
On the rare case I play engi, shotgun with buck for the stuns. I tend to end up fixing or building some nonsense by myself when Bravo wanders off.
I wonder if there're any support players who use the "new" M79 Grenade Launcher as their primary weapon. Aside from that, only fact that surprised me is that, a lot of people stopped using SU-6 smart pistols. I remember times where each medic and some of the engies would get in line for experimental kits at Req line. Is there anyone here from those players that'd care to explain why they stopped using smartpistols?
M37A2 with gyro RC, slugs tend to work well as medic as they can reliably one hand stun up to six tiles
Dual smart pistols, just sit one rank behind everyone and burst anything that comes close to you. But if I’m medic I’m going buck to keep the scary runners and lurkers away
